Resumen Este artículo introductorio al dossier temático trae a colación nuevos planteamientos en cuanto a la mirada que tenemos sobre las diásporas negras y con respecto a los marcos conceptuales y empíricos de los estudios sobre las movilidades. Está dividido en tres partes. En la primera, abordamos la teoría reciente sobre las diásporas, así como su historicidad, espacialidades y diversidades aplicadas al Atlántico negro. En la segunda, repasamos el debate académico en torno a las (in)movilidades en trayectorias extendidas como las registradas en los textos del dossier. Luego, nos acercamos a las geografías reconfiguradas por el paso y la instalación de personas negras en el continente americano. En la tercera parte, proponemos una sistematización en dos niveles: la contribución del dossier a los estudios sobre las movilidades y diásporas negras en las Américas y las líneas temáticas trabajadas. Por último, presentamos sucintamente cada uno de los textos.

Abstract This introductory paper to the dossier brings up new approaches to black diasporas and to the conceptual and empirical frameworks of mobility studies. It is divided into three parts. In the first, we address recent theory on diaspora, as well as the historicity, spatialities and diversities as applied to the Black Atlantic. In the second, we review the scholarship in the field of (im)mobilities in extended trajectories such as those examined in the dossier. Then, we approach the geographies reconfigured by the transit and settlement of Black people in the Americas. In the third part, we propose a systematization on two levels: the contribution of the dossier to studies on Black mobilities and diasporas, and the thematic lines explored. Finally, we briefly present each paper.

Resumo Desde a virada do século XXI, a circulação de pessoas da África Ocidental dentro e fora do continente africano intensificou-se, transformando a América Latina num destino emergente e numa zona de trânsito. Extraído tanto de obras académicas como de ficção, este artigo reflete sobre tropos de devir social dentro de uma história do movimento humano da África Ocidental que precede a circulação atual. Por tropos de devir social, refiro-me a narrativas em torno de pessoas que realizam aspirações, que estudiosos, contadores de histórias, pessoas literárias, e os meios de comunicação social trazem à existência. Enquanto alguns dos tropos que este artigo aborda parecem estender-se aos tempos pré-coloniais, outros são o produto do domínio colonial, e ainda outros emergem em tempos de ajustamento estrutural. Estes tropos oferecem um ponto de entrada para compreender como as circulações atuais de africanos na África Ocidental e na América Latina se relacionam com a continuidade e a mudança.

Abstract Since the turn of the 21st century, the circulation of people from West Africa in and out of the African continent has intensified, turning Latin America into an emergent destination and transit zone. Drawing both from scholarly works and fiction, this article reflects on tropes of social becoming within a history of West African human movement that precedes present day circulation. By tropes of social becoming, I mean narratives around people realizing aspirations, in which scholars, storytellers, literary persons, and the media bring it into existence. While some of the tropes this article addresses seem to stretch to pre-colonial times, others are the product of colonial rule, and yet others emerge in times of structural adjustment. These tropes offer an entry point to understanding how present circulations of Africans in West Africa and Latin America relate to continuity and change.

Resumo O artigo tem por objetivo contribuir para o mapeamento e as reflexões sobre as mobilidades de populações negras oriundas do continente africano para a América do Sul. Como é sabido, tais rotas se deram (e se dão) de maneira continuada, porém com especificidades, ritmos e características bastante diversos. A partir de dados sobre as mobilidades de cabo-verdianos para países sul-americanos , focando no caso do Brasil, pretendemos demonstrar como tal fluxo se insere em movimentos mais amplos da diáspora cabo-verdiana e se conecta com dinâmicas históricas do lado de lá e de cá do Atlântico, que acabam por moldar as estratégias, os ritmos e as características de tais fluxos ao longo do tempo. Nosso recorte temporal segue a dinâmica já mapeada por historiadores, ou seja, o século XX é nosso cenário a partir das vagas de fluxos de cabo-verdianos que nos trazem até os dias atuais, o que nos permite incorporar movimentos diversos e que não se restringem às migrações, apesar de se interconectarem com estas.

Abstract This article aims to contribute to mapping and reflecting on the mobility of black populations from the African continent to South America. As is known, such routes have been (and still are) continued over time, but with very different specificities, rhythms and characteristics. Based on data on the mobility of Cape Verdeans to South American countries, focusing on the case of Brazil, we intend to demonstrate how this flow is part of broader movements of the Cape Verdean diaspora and is connected to historical dynamics on both sides of the Atlantic, which have shaped the strategies, rhythms and characteristics of such flows over time. Our temporal frame follows the dynamics already mapped by historians, that is, the twentieth century is our scenario from the waves of Cape Verdean flows that bring us to the present day, which allows us to incorporate diverse movements and that are not restricted to migrations, despite being interconnected with these.

Resumen La música ha sido una fuerza de cohesión social y un espacio de conciencia politizada para los emigrantes de la diáspora haitiana desde el estallido de la Revolución Haitiana (1791-1804). Este ensayo explora el movimiento Vodou Jazz de Haití, durante y después de la ocupación estadounidense (1915-1934), conectando este movimiento del siglo XX con la migración haitiana a Nueva Orleans a principios del siglo XIX. Ambos son expresiones de la cultura transcaribeña ("el viento común") que difundió las noticias y la militancia de la Revolución haitiana a través del canto y la danza populares. En lugar de ser víctimas pasivas de la esclavitud, la migración forzada y el imperialismo económico, este ensayo demuestra cómo múltiples comunidades transnacionales dieron sentido a su mundo a través de una sofisticada cultura auditiva que desafiaba al imperialismo, la esclavitud y el modo de producción en las plantaciones.

Abstract Music has been a force for social cohesion and a site of politicized consciousness for the migrants of the Haitian diaspora as early as the outbreak of the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804). This essay explores Vodou Jazz movement of Haiti during and after the United States occupation (1915-1934) by connecting this 20th century movement to Haitian migration to New Orleans in the early 19th century. Both are expressions of transcarribean culture (“the common wind”) which spread the news and militancy of the Haitian Revolution through popular song and dance. Rather than passive victims to enslavement, forced migration, and economic imperialism, this essay demonstrates how multiple transnational communities made sense of their world through a sophisticated aural culture which challenged imperialism, slavery, and the plantation mode of production.

Resumen Esta investigación indaga en la dimensión corporal de la interseccionalidad entre mujeres migrantes. Para ello se consideran las trayectorias corporales de mujeres afrocolombianas en Arica, frontera norte de Chile donde se desarrolla además el movimiento afrochileno. En la última década, la llegada de población afrolatinoamericana y afrocaribeña al país suscita reacciones de racismo, discriminación y xenofobia. A su vez, hace dos décadas, el movimiento afrochileno conforma organizaciones que reclaman el reconocimiento efectivo de sus comunidades, entre ellas agrupaciones musicales. Desde un enfoque cualitativo, se realizan dos historias de vida y mapas corporales con mujeres afrocolombianas que participan del movimiento afrochileno a través de la danza, y se ahonda en sus procesos corporales vinculados a las trayectorias migrantes. Se destaca que para las mujeres afrodescendientes migrantes la danza se transforma en una estrategia vinculada a sus cuerpos que propicia procesos de agencia.

Abstract This research investigates the corporeal dimension of intersectionality among migrant women. For this purpose, it considers the bodily trajectories of Afro-Colombian women in Arica, northern border of Chile, where the Afro-Chilean movement is also developing. In the last decade, the arrival of Afro-Latin American and Afro-Caribbean population to the country has provoked reactions of racism, discrimination and xenophobia. In turn, two decades ago, the Afro-Chilean movement formed organizations that demanded the effective recognition of their communities, among them musical groups. From a qualitative approach, two life stories and body maps are made with Afro-Colombian women who participate in the Afro-Chilean movement through dance, and their body processes linked to migrant trajectories are studied in depth. It is highlighted that for Afro-descendant migrant women, dance becomes a strategy linked to their bodies that promotes processes of agency.

Resumo Este artigo analisa a trajetória de pequeno grupo de haitianos que concluíram cursos superiores na Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), entre 2019 e 2021. Em termos concretos, examinamos a relação entre habitus e capitais de cada migrante que frequentou as aulas de português, concluiu os cursos superiores e iniciou sua carreira profissional. A seleção dos entrevistados foi realizada a partir da base de dados de alunos imigrantes e refugiados disponibilizada pela Pró-Reitoria de Assuntos Estudantis da UFPR. Como referencial teórico, utilizamos os conceitos de habitus imigrante e capital migratório, desenvolvidos a partir da Teoria da Prática (Pierre Bourdieu, 1930-2002). Em síntese, percebe-se que aqueles imigrantes providos de habitus adequados e de capitais específicos foram mais exitosos em seus percursos educacionais e inserção no mercado de trabalho.

Abstract. This article analyzes the trajectory of a small group of Haitians who completed higher education courses at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), between 2019 and 2021. In concrete terms, we examine the relationship between habitus and capital of each migrant who attended Portuguese classes, completed higher education and started his professional career. The selection of interviewees was carried out from the database of immigrant and refugee students made available by the Pro-Rectory of Student Affairs at UFPR. As a theoretical framework, we used the concepts of immigrant habitus and migratory capital, developed from the Theory of Practice (Pierre Bourdieu, 1930-2002). In summary, it is clear that those immigrants with adequate habitus and specific capital were more successful in their educational paths and insertion in the labor market.

Resumen La migración afrocaribeña en Chile se distribuye principalmente en las ciudades del norte y centro del país. La representación de estas geografías en los medios de prensa habla de supuestas formas de habitar migrante, las que profundizan la estigmatización y los estereotipos sobre estas poblaciones y los territorios que habitan. El análisis inductivo descriptivo sobre migración internacional en medios de comunicación online entre los años 2016 y 2021 evidenció un vuelco en las representaciones sobre estos colectivos y los sectores de su residencia, que inició con la caracterización sociodemográfica, para pasar a construir en este habitar una alerta sanitaria en el contexto del COVID-19. En este vuelo los discursos de autoridades nacionales y locales fueron claves, al asociar comunas y morfologías habitacionales a poblaciones migrantes, traslapando problemas territoriales y habitacionales a categorías migratorias y nacionalidades. El texto problematiza el uso de estos discursos para la estigmatización territorial.

Abstract Afro-Caribbean migration in Chile is distributed mainly in the cities of the north and center of the country. The representation of these geographies in the media speaks of supposed forms of migrant habitation, which deepen the stigmatization and stereotypes about these populations and the territories they inhabit. The descriptive inductive analysis on international migration in online media between 2016 and 2021 evidenced a shift in the representations about these groups and the sectors of their residence, which began with the sociodemographic characterization, to move on to build on this inhabiting a health alert in the context of COVID-19. In this flight, the discourses of national and local authorities were key, associating communes and housing morphologies to migrant populations, overlapping territorial and housing problems to migratory categories and nationalities. The text problematizes the use of these discourses for territorial stigmatization.

Resumen El objetivo es documentar e interpretar las representaciones sobre racismo y exclusión social que personas haitianas en condición de migración transnacional han construido, como resultado de experiencias vividas durante procesos de integración en ciudades de acogida de Chile y México. A partir de referentes teóricos sobre las Representaciones sociales y de un tejido conceptual entre racismo, exclusión social y precariedad laboral, se realiza un análisis de contenido con enfoque narrativo centrado en el discurso de las y los entrevistados. Los resultados muestran representaciones que proyectan vidas cotidianas simbólicamente violentadas por prácticas generadas en las sociedades receptoras, marcadas por el racismo, la exclusión social y la empleabilidad en situaciones de precarización. Estas tensiones están vinculadas a una condición migratoria irregular, son recurrentes, aunque no generalizadas. Reflejan, en distintos grados y diferentes matices, una condición estructural que opera a nivel macro y micro social tanto en Chile como en México.

Abstract The objective is to document and interpret the representations about racism and social exclusion that Haitian people in a condition of transnational migration have built, from experiences during integration processes in host cities in Chile and Mexico. Based on theoretical references on social representations and a conceptual fabric between racism, social exclusion and job insecurity, a content analysis is carried out with a narrative approach focused on the discourse of the interviewees. The results show representations that project daily lives symbolically violated by practices generated in the receiving societies, marked by racism, social exclusion and employability in precarious situations. These tensions are linked to an irregular migratory condition, they are recurrent although not generalized. They reflect, to different degrees and different nuances, a structural condition that operates at the macro and micro social levels in both Chile and Mexico.

Resumo Esse trabalho analisa os pedidos judiciais de reunião familiar realizados por nacionais do Haiti residentes no Brasil. Esse fenômeno evidencia uma nova fase na dinâmica dessa migração, acompanhando as reconfigurações das relações bilaterais entre ambos os países. Se, no começo do fluxo, as possibilidades de regularização migratória refletiam o papel desempenhado pelo Brasil na MINUSTAH, atualmente, os entraves burocráticos impostos a essa mobilidade demonstram o recrudescimento da crise migratória no destino, expressa sobretudo na regulamentação e nos constrangimentos estabelecidos pelo Estado brasileiro. Nesse contexto, o Brasil assume outro sentido para as migrações haitianas: de país tampão, para país fronteira dos direitos humanos. A partir disso, explorar as disputas e contradições que marcam esse processo constitui a questão do artigo.

Abstract This paper analyzes the legal requests for family reunification filed by Haitian nationals residing in Brazil. This phenomenon reveals a new phase in the dynamics of this migration, accompanying the reconfiguration of bilateral relations between the two countries. If, at the beginning of the flow, the possibilities for migratory regularization reflected the role played by Brazil in MINUSTAH, today the bureaucratic obstacles imposed on this movement demonstrate the intensification of the migratory crisis at the destination, expressed especially in the regulations and constraints established by the Brazilian state. In this context, the country takes on another meaning for the Haitian migrations: from buffer country to human rights frontier country. Therefore, exploring the disputes and contradictions that mark this process constitutes the central question of this investigation.

Resumen. En las últimas décadas se produjo un aumento del flujo migratorio de personas provenientes de distintos países de África que transitan el continente americano para llegar a Estados Unidos y Canadá. Particularmente desde el 2014, la presencia de estas migraciones en tránsito por Costa Rica ha sido más visibilizada, esto ha producido distintas respuestas institucionales para controlar y acompañar su tránsito por el país. Este artículo tiene como fin visibilizar y problematizar algunos de los principales desafíos presentes en la atención institucional a las migraciones africanas en tránsito por Costa Rica. Se realizaron distintas entrevistas a funcionarios y funcionarias del área de migración (tanto de instituciones estatales como de Organismos Internacionales) que comparten vínculos laborales con personas en movilidad provenientes de África. Más que entrar en profundidad en las políticas públicas específicas, el artículo analiza las inquietudes, tensiones y contradicciones presentes en la atención cotidiana de esta migración y, a partir de las reflexiones y experiencias de las personas entrevistadas, se sugiere algunas prácticas que fortalecerían horizontes más hospitalarios con las y los africanos en el país.

Abstract. In recent decades there has been an increase of the amount of people from different countries from Africa who are transiting the American continent to reach the United States and Canada. Particularly in Costa Rica, since 2014 the presence of these migrations in transit has been more visible, which has produced different institutional responses to control and accompany their transit through the country. This article aims to make visible and problematize some of the main challenges present in the institutional attention to African migrations in transit in Costa Rica. Various interviews were conducted with officials in the area of ​​migration (both from state institutions and international organizations) who have worked with this flow of migrants in the country.. Rather than going into depth on the public policies that permeate this migratory transit, the focus of the article is analyzing the concerns, tensions and contradictions present in the daily attention of this migration and also suggests practices that could strengthen more hospitable horizons with Africans in the country.

Resumo Este artigo propõe a noção de Fronteiras da Cidadania para enfatizar infraestruturas de mobilidade que mediam a cidadania por meio de muitos lugares, atores e códigos sociais do e além do Estado. Baseado no conceito de "cidadania relacional", eu apresento uma etnografia realizada entre 2019 e 2022 em um Centro Cultural criado por migrantes africanos na cidade de São Paulo. Mais especificamente, destaco à criação do Centro para analisar como as infraestruturas de mobilidade desempenham um papel decisivo na mediação da vida cotidiana dos migrantes, expandindo a sustentabilidade de vida material e imaterialmente. Portanto, eu argumento que esses lugares cotidianos não são inconsequentes politicamente nem para a cidade, nem para os migrantes. Ao contrário, mostram como a mobilidade e a cidade estão entrelaçados entre muitas mediações além do Estado, apresentando protagonistas locais, redes (in)formais e um senso de pertencimento que constantemente redesenha os parâmetros da Cidadania.

Abstract This paper proposes the notion of the “Borders of Citizenship” to emphasize people and mobility infrastructures (Jung, Buhr, 2021) that mediate citizenship through many places, actors, and social codes of and beyond the State. Thus, based on the concept of relational citizenship (Staheli et al., 2012), I present an Ethnography carried out from 2019 to 2022 in a Cultural Center, founded by African migrants in the city of São Paulo. More specifically, I draw attention to the center’s creation through Mamadou’s trajectory, the owner of the center, to highlight how mobility infrastructures play a decisive role in mediating migrant’s everyday life through many places, actors, and scales expanding their “sustainability of life”, materially and immaterially. I argue that these ordinary spaces are not politically inconsequential for the city or for the migrants. Rather, it shows how mobility and the city are entangled among many mediations that go beyond State, presenting local protagonists, (in)formal networks, and a sense of belonging that constantly reshapes Citizenship.

Resumo Esse artigo procura entrelaçar uma reflexão sobre as regras burocráticas de documentação de imigrantes na Irlanda com a questão de visibilidade ou invisibilidade dos corpos de imigrantes brasileiros. O argumento central é que os regimes de documentação/indocumentação são responsáveis por uma flutuação na visibilidade dos imigrantes para o Estado irlandês, tornando-os ora materiais e visíveis e ora imateriais e invisíveis e, muitas vezes, em algum lugar entre esses dois polos. Essa flutuação é responsável por várias ordens de dificuldades na vida de muitos imigrantes, desde a falta de acesso a serviços até processos de lenta ocultação dos próprios corpos. Para a realização do texto, utilizo-me de dados do trabalho de campo etnográfico, realizado entre imigrantes brasileiros na Irlanda entre março e junho de 2022, assim como da análise das legislações de migração irlandesas.

Abstract This article seeks to intertwine a reflection on the bureaucratic rules of immigrant documentation in Ireland with the issue of visibility or invisibility of the bodies of Brazilian immigrants. The central argument is that documentation/undocumentation regimes are responsible for a fluctuation in the visibility of immigrants to the Irish State, making them sometimes material and visible, occasionally immaterial and invisible, and often somewhere between these two poles. This fluctuation is responsible for several orders of difficulties in the lives of many immigrants, from lack of access to services to processes of slow concealment of their bodies. To realise the text, I use data from ethnographic fieldwork carried out among Brazilian immigrants in Ireland between March and June 2022 and the analysis of Irish migration legislation.

Resumo. A partir de El mar la mar, documentário que narra as histórias e os testemunhos dos migrantes que se arriscam na travessia do México para os EUA através do deserto de Sonora, o artigo sondará como esse exercício cinematográfico permite abertura de veredas, de alguns “espaços outros” constituídos pelo filme na imensidão desértica: neles, consideraremos as singularidades das vidas que fazem a difícil travessia rumo à fronteira. Nos avizinharemos dessas existências através das vozes que nos interpelam a partir dos objetos deixados para trás, dos relatos de si ofertados entre lágrimas, das palavras de incentivo escritas aos que continuarão vindo em busca de um sonho. Junto a tais questões, também exploraremos os conceitos de Spielraum, constelação e imagem dialética (Benjamin), as noções de limiares e heterotopias (Foucault) e o conceito de fabulação crítica (Hartman) e como todos eles se vinculam à luz das vidas migrantes.

Abstract. From El mar la mar, a film documentary that narrates the stories and testimonies of migrants who take the risk of crossing from Mexico to the USA through the Sonoran desert, the article will probe how this cinematographic exercise allows opening of paths, of some “other spaces” constituted by the film in the desert immensity: in them, we will try to consider the singularity of the lives that make the difficult crossing towards the border. We will approach these existences through the voices that challenge us from the objects left behind, the reports of themselves offered between tears, the words of encouragement written to those who will continue to come in search of a dream. Along these questions, we will also explore some concepts: Spielraum, constellation and dialectical image (Benjamin), the notions of thresholds and heterotopias (Foucault) and the concept of critical fabulation (Hartman) and how all of them are linked to the light of migrant lives.

Resumen América Central ha experimentado importantes niveles de migración forzada desde las últimas décadas del siglo XX. Las restricciones a la migración implementadas por Estados Unidos han derivado gran parte de estos flujos a España. En este texto se ofrece un análisis estructural de los procesos migratorios ocurridos entre Honduras, El Salvador y España, a través de una perspectiva crítica interdisciplinar que combina el estudio de la migración forzada con el análisis del contexto histórico en las que ocurren estos movimientos de población, arrojando luz sobre la situación de los migrantes procedentes de estos dos países centroamericanos en España.

Abstract Central America experienced important levels of forced migration since last decades of 20th century. Restrictions to migrant fluxes implemented by the United States derived part of these migration fluxes to Spain. This work offers a structural analysis of migration processes that took place between Honduras, El Salvador and Spain, through a critical interdisciplinary approach that encompass the study of forced migration with the analysis of the historical context in which population movements occur, shedding light on the situation of migrants coming from these two Central American countries to Spain.
