Religião & Sociedade is a journal published three times a year dedicated to religious subjects in all its relationship with society. It was created in 1977 by the Center for Religion Studies (CER) and the Institute for Religion Studies (ISER), which currently publishes it. It publishes cutting-edge research results, conceptual and methodological reflections, as well as visual essays and reviews of recent works in its theme. Religião & Sociedade is one of the most important journals within the Social Sciences area and since its foundation has been contributing to the exchange of the production of different postgraduate programs and research centers in Brazil and abroad on the theme of religion. Among its objectives, we highlight:
Its abbreviated title is Relig. Soc. , which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips. Religião & Sociedade adopts the principles of ethics and good practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), and of SciELO. Its collection in SciELO gathers articles published since 2007. Scope and Editorial policy
|
Religião & Sociedade is a quarterly magazine devoted to the theme of religion in all its possibilities of relations with society. It publishes cutting-edge research results and conceptual and methodological reflections, as well as visual essays and reviews of recent works on its theme. It is open to various approaches, trends, perspectives and proposals for interpretation within the humanities, especially in the field of social sciences. Each issue includes articles by Brazilian and foreign researchers from different regionally diverse institutions. The three issues of the journal released every year consist of flow articles and reviews of works recently published in Brazil and abroad. In some cases, also by articles linked to thematic dossiers proposed by national and international researchers and announced in the journal's media. Religião & Sociedade accepts submissions in Portuguese, English or Spanish in the following format:

Submission guidelines

1. For article submission The texts must be sent only through the SciELO collection online system, in open Word format or other compatible format. The text may have between 7,000 and 10,000 words, including footnotes and bibliography, which should come at the end of the text. The notes must contain complementary and substantive information and cannot consist of bibliographic references only. The standards for bibliographic references are set out below. The cover page should contain: article title and text summary in Portuguese and English (between 80 and 120 words). In the document sent by the Scielo.com system there cannot be any kind of information that identifies the authorship of the article.
2. For submission of reviews and visual essays
The reviews must present works published in the last five years, whether academic or literary books, ethnographic documentaries and videos, photobooks, exhibitions, and other scientific and cultural productions as they result from original research in the area of social sciences, humanities and arts, in connection with the theme of religion in its multiple possibilities of expression and approach. It should indicate the connection and contribution of the analyzed work to the most recent debates in the journal. Reviews can give rise to critical discussions about the interpretation of the facts, the methods adopted or the proposed theoretical choices. In order to preserve textual clarity, it is recommended to gather critical comments in a specific part after the summary itself. Reviews containing allusive (unfounded) criticism and personal attacks will be disregarded. Based on the criteria indicated above, the evaluation may have three results: “approved review”, “approved review with modifications” and “rejected review” (no resubmission). The last two results will be communicated with a brief opinion. The author (s) are requested to give a title to the review available in Portuguese and English. The bibliographic reference of the reviewed work should come at the beginning, according to the rules regarding the submission of articles: AUTHOR'S LAST NAME, first name. Title of the work. Place of publication: publisher, date, no. if not the first edition, no. of pages. For example, GEERTZ, Clifford. The Interpretation of Cultures. Rio de Janeiro: Guanabara Koogan, 1989, 325pp. Other works cited in the review should have their complete references presented in a note at the end of the text.
The Visual Essays - of photography, ethnographic drawing or visual arts - must result from detailed research and in connection with debates pertinent to the journal's profile. The images (in 300 dpi) will be accompanied by a text and, optionally, by subtitles, presenting the conditions of elaboration of the essay, its poetics and methodology. They must also present title, abstract, and keywords in English. The authors must send a signed statement authorizing the publication of the images and taking responsibility for the right to use them. The declaration must be attached as a "supplementary document" at the time of submission. Reviews and Visual Essays should be between 1,000 and 3,000 words, including bibliographical references and title. They will be evaluated by the Editors of Reviews and the Editorial Board, who may request a specific opinion if deemed appropriate. 3. For interview submission The interviews submitted to Religião & Sociedade should privilege classical or contemporary authors whose relevance of their work in the present time is attested by the wide citation by the scientific community, according to the interest of the editors of the journal. The material must be unpublished and contain up to 10 thousand words, including notes and bibliography. It is the author's responsibility to request the necessary authorizations from the interviewees, sending them, in time, to the journal for filing. Please note: For separate articles and interviews, choose the “Articles” section. For dossiers, choose the “Section” item and point to the intended dossier. For reviews, and visual essays choose the section "Section" then clicking on "Reviews and Visual essays".
4. Bibliography presentation rules References should be located in the body of the text and the notes. They follow the form (Author Year) or (Author Year: Page), as in the example (Mauss 1960: 32). If there is more than one title by the same author in the same year, they will be distinguished by a letter after the date, as in the example (Mauss 1960a; Mauss 1960b). Bibliography, at the end of the paper, must be in the following format:
Book: Author's last name, first name. (date), Title of Work. Place of publication: publisher, issue number if not first.
Article: Author's last name, first name. (date), “Article Title”. Journal title, issue number: pages.
Collection: Author's last name, first name. (date), “Chapter Title”. In: initials of the name followed by the surname of the organizer (s). Collection title. place of publication: publisher, issue no. if not first.
Academic Theses: AUTHOR'S LAST NAME, first name. (date), Title of the thesis. Place: Academic degree to which it refers, institution in which it was presented. |
Manuscript evaluation policy

The manuscripts received go through an initial filter performed by the Assistant Editor in which the formal adequacy of the text to the submission rules is evaluated. Papers that meet the formal requirements will be analyzed by the Editorial Committee, which will issue a desk review to assess standards of academic quality and suitability to the scope, objectives, and editorial policy/mission of the journal. The texts that pass this first stage will be submitted to a double blind peer review. Ad hoc reviewers - experts working in the field of knowledge of the article - are invited to evaluate the article, ensuring that there are no conflicts of interest of any kind. There are four possible outcomes of step two: 1) approved for unmodified publication, 2) approved for conditional publication, 3) revised and resubmitted, and 4) declined. The Journal will not accept resubmissions if the two reviewers indicate “revise and resubmit” or if one of the referees refuses the article and the editorial board deems the opinion appropriate. If there is consistent disagreement between two reviews, the journal will invite a third reviewer. In case of approval, the author (s) must send to Religion and Society the final version of the text with the alterations defined by the editors based on the previously issued opinions. Papers that are being simultaneously evaluated by other journal (s) will not be sent to the evaluation stages described above. The articles take two months to receive an initial evaluation from editorial committee and forwarded to reviewers. On average, the total evaluation time for the manuscript is six months. The modifications made to the articles by their authors and sent to the editors of the journal, as requested by the editors and reviewers, should appear as "change control" or in a different color in the text for easy identification. It is also recommended that authors of articles send attached remarks directly to the editors presenting what was modified and/or justifying the suggestions that were not incorporated. The authors must send the articles with the suggested modifications within 30 days after receiving the editors' requests. Editorial decisions, and the arguments behind them, are communicated through the submission platform and reiterated by email. If accepted, the author must submit on the SciELO platform the new version of the article accompanied by the following items:
(a) title in Portuguese and English; The interstice for publication in Religião & Sociedade is 24 months between the publication of one article and the submission of another by the same author or co-author. Those who have their articles published in Religião & Sociedade are immediately included in our board of reviewers. This is a voluntary contribution of fundamental importance for the permanence of scientific journals. Eventual appeals and contestations to the results of any stage of the evaluation process will be analyzed and answered by the editors within 30 days, in light of the national and international codes of ethics and good practices. |
Dossier proposals
|
The thematic dossiers should follow the profile of the Journal, with a focus on the Social Sciences. The proposals should cover, whenever possible, a theme that cuts across the various religious fields. In cases where this criterion is not used, it is essential to present a justification for the exceptionality and relevance of the proposal. The proponents should belong to the academic community of the journal, that is, be part of its Editorial Board, have published in Religião e Sociedade and/or acted as reviewers. By submitting a manuscript or review, authors commit not to submit it to another journal during the review process. Conversely, the Journal does not accept papers that are still under review in other journals. Neither will the Journal receive two simultaneous evaluations by the same author, understanding that it configures simultaneity to submit a new article while another has not yet been published or rejected. The submission of any collaboration automatically implies the full assignment of the copyright to Religião & Sociedade, including translation, if the article is approved for publication. Authors are allowed to reproduce their articles as long as the original source (Relig. Soc.) is cited. The Journal adopts CC-BY license used internationally by leading open access journals and publishers, in accordance with SciELO. Such a license maximizes the dissemination of articles for scientific and educational purposes. It is understood that every author of an article published in Religião & Sociedade agrees to the use of this type of license. |
Originality and plagiarism
|
All articles approved in the first stage will be subjected to plagiarism testing and “self-plagiarism” or republishing (publication as unpublished material of texts already published). Papers that do not meet the originality criterion will be automatically rejected. The opinions expressed in signed articles and the integrity of the content of the articles are the sole responsibility of their authors. |
Corrections and retractions
|
Discussions and corrections after the article is published should be addressed to the editors via e-mail religiaoesociedade@iser.org.br. Rectification procedures, whether it is an erratum, expression of concern or retraction, will be deliberated by the editors based on the code of ethics and good practices adopted by the journal. |
Policy and best practice
|
Religião & Sociedade adopts the principles of ethics and good practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), and of SciELO. The same commitment is required of authors and reviewers. In case of identification of bad practices related to an article submitted to the journal - plagiarism, manipulation of data and citations, conflicts of interest, among other conducts - the editors will act based on these principles. |
