CULTURE OF MARITIME FISHING TRADE

Abstract

The article approaches a traditional group of artisanal fishermen from Brazil, the rafters, aiming to understand how they constituted a culture of maritime fishing trade, from the sixteenth century until 1970. For that, a socio-historical approach was combined (writings and images) with field research where 12 deep sea rafters from São José da Coroa Grande beach, Pernambuco, were interviewed. It concludes that the rafters represented the encounter of two traditions (the maritime and the profession) that had in a floating society (the raft) its existential landmark and locus of socio-cultural reproduction.
