Letter to our readers

The Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada (RBLA) starts its tenth year with innovations. Following its consolidation in the Brazilian academy and the good assessment that it has received from CAPES, the editors realized that the time had come for yet another important move. RBLA ceases to exist as a semestral publication to be quarterly. As from now there will be four issues per year, two being thematic and two general, the latter with a continual flow for submission.

The other news is its international policy and the participation of renowned researchers in the co-organization of thematic issues, helping us to attract international authors in this way. These special issues will be published in English and will have a specific call for papers. Consult our website for further information. In 2010, exceptionally, one of the thematic issues will be dedicated to selected papers from the Seminário Internacional de Gêneros Textuais (SIGET), with the co-organization of Charles Bazerman and Marcos Baltar. There will be articles in English and in Portuguese. The selected texts were submitted to our Editorial Board and presently are being edited. From now on, there will be public calls for papers for all the thematic issues. The following schedule covers the thematic issues to be published over the next five years.

A third innovation is the promotion of debate. In the next issue we will begin a debate between Charles Bazerman and Kanavillil Rajagopalan and we expect others to emerge. We would like RBLA to be not only a vehicle of scientific production in Applied Linguistics, but a dynamic space which will prompt debates and new ideas. We would like to publish interviews and a greater amount of reviews. In order to do this, we hope to count on the participation of our readers.

It is necessary to point out that RBLA has been made financially possible with the constant support from UFMG, FAPEMIG and CNPq. This issue and the next have been supported by expressive resources directed to the Graduate Program in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at UFMG by the University's administration.

I would like to acknowledge the fundamental role of our reviewers, whose competence and attendance to deadlines has guaranteed the quality and periodicity of the journal. We dedicate the success of the journal to them.

Vera Lúcia Menezes de Oliveira e Paiva

Editor of RBLA
