What Do You Ask and What Do You Infer: Intricacies of a Trial and Relevance Theory

Abstract

By means of relevance theory, a cognitive approach to pragmatics, we propose in this paper an analysis that aims to simulate an interpretive process, applying some theoretical-analytical elements presented by the authors in their work Relevance, Communication and Cognition as well as subsequent papers. The purpose of the study is to examine, from a given perspective, the way in which inferential processes of understanding are generated from the questioning of two lawyers, in opposing positions, to the same witness and one of the defendants in the trial involving a couple of movie actors which took place recently in the State of Virginia, United States.
