Global tectonics in geography textbooks of the 1st grade of high school: a content analysis

Abstract

Geography textbooks address Global Tectonics since the 6th year of Elementary School; however, it is in the disposition of the contents of the 1st Grade of High School that this theme receives greater emphasis. This work aims to analyze the quality of imagery and textual representations about the Theory of Global Tectonics present in the 14 textbooks of Geography of the 1st Grade of High School distributed by the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático in the 2018/2020 triennium. For this purpose, the information on Global Tectonics was quantified and qualified, observing whether they provide clear and correct subsidies that help in the teaching of Geography in Basic Education. It was observed that in the presentation of this theme, there is a need for fundamental corrections and, in some books, there was a lack of relevant information, such as the issue of seismicity existing in the Brazilian territory. Therefore, this work aims to contribute to the improvement of Brazilian textbooks by proposing corrections, adjustments and suggestions based on specialized bibliographies, but without conceptual verticalizations that could escape the scope of this theme of High School.
