UNIVERSITY FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOL STUDENTS: FROM PREPARATION TO SOCIO-COGNITIVE BARRIERS

ABSTRACT

This article studies the personal implication and the social representations about the university for high school students from public and private schools of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 160 students (80 public and 80 private) answered a questionnaire with free evocations and Likert items about university. In the prototypical analysis, future, study, and responsibility appear as the probable central elements shared by the subgroups. However, terms that translate a preparation for university are exclusive to private-school students. The social thinking of public-school students creates a socio-cognitive distance from the university that potentially produce a barrier. However, on the scale of personal involvement, there is a significant difference in the valuation of the university by family and friends.
