Social control and conflict resolution in a Kaingang territory: a study on the indigenous jail

Abstract

In this paper we present the preliminary results of a research project whose objective is to investigate social control and conflict resolution in a Kaingang territory, with the central problem of understanding the genesis and current punitive meanings of the indigenous jail used by this community. This study is being carried out based on intercultural dialogue and knowledge exchange with an indigenous student, as well as through ethnography and oral history, which is justified insofar as the theoretical and empirical challenges raised are in line with the demands of the community in question.
