EDITOR'S LETTER
The dossier "Law and regional development in Brazil", published in this edition, is a result from a call of articles that provoked the Brazilian intellectual community to deal with important regional problems which aren`t being considered on the debates about development in Brazil. The five articles selected by our editorial board deal with varied topics, urban and rural problems, focusing on social issues related to sustainable development, in the opposite direction of a strictly economic view of development.
These articles remind us that development is not assigned to automatically address all social issues. Many other questions need special attention. The world debate about development points to this direction, currently more concerned with individuals possibilities of choice and their capacity to trace their own destiny regarding the objective possibilities present in their context.
Besides this dossier, we published articles about various subjects, like informed consent, paternity investigation, the formation of precedents, gambling games regulation, internet regulation,the enforcement of rights of the accused on criminal procedure, the human rights and its relation to fundamental rights, Islamic law and the citizenship on the European Union. This variety of themes highlights the diversity of research on the Brazilian legal community and leaves us with suggestions about new article calls and dossier organization for future volumes.
