Effects of timolol 0.5% and betaxolol 0.5% on the aqueous humor protein concentration by laser flare photometry in normal and open angle glaucomatous eyes

SUMMARY

This study was performed to demonstrate this increase with two beta-blockers (timolol 0.5% and betaxolol 0.5%) in 21 normal volunteers and 11 glaucomatous patients, and the relationship between flare and IOP variations.

The study was performed before and two hours after the instillation of one drop of timolol on the right eye and one drop of betaxolol on the left eye. The results have shown that for normal volunteers timolol and betaxolol increased significantly the flare in two hours (P < O.05) but the increase was higher with timolol than betaxolol (P < 0.05). In the glaucomatous patients group the flare increase was not significant two hours after medications. When were compared both medications for each group. the timolol increased higher the flare on normal than glaucomatous (P < 0.05) and betaxolol did not show any difference. It was not possible to correlate flare and IOP variations.
