Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos: political ideas in a cultural review

Cuadernos hispanoamericanos, created in 1948, presented itself as periodical of culture intended to draw Spaniards and Latin Americans closer together toward a common identity. It is still in circulation today, but has different features from its initial phase. From 1948 to 1955, the periodical took on a specific political function, aiming at obtaining the support of Hispanic American sectors to overcome the external blockade against the Franco regime, which became isolated internationally after the end of the Second World War because of its identification with Nazism-Fascism. Spain was only integrated into the UN in 1955, after an intense struggle to overcome this ostracism. The central objective of this study is to understand the meaning of the political project that defined the coordinates of the periodical during this period, by attempting to make explicit the meanings of the ideal of hispanidade, over which a broad discussion took place. The periodical allowed the circulation of ideas related to the theme, ideas that were transformed throughout the period due to changes in the internal and external set of circumstances. We intend to make a reading of the relation of text and context in the periodical Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos, given the intersection, in its pages, of cultural/intellectual and ideological/political aspects. It is intended in this way that the relation between the political ideas and the social dynamic in the period during which they were developed be explored.
