The representation of women in cinema: a study from state of knowledge research

Abstract

The research’s theme is the representation of women in cinema, intending to analyze the arguments raised on this theme by qualified research in Brazil, in Portuguese. The importance of the study is justified, mainly, by the influence of cinema in the creation of gender identification processes, also in the legal world (legislatively and judicially). It starts with the following problem: what is the representation of gender in cinema, pointed out by the qualified Brazilian bibliography? The hypothesis sustains that there is a correlation between the results of the Brazilian research and those pointed out by Lauretis, Mulvey and hooks, that is, of having an objectification of the woman, being her represented as an object to the male gaze; in addition, with an underrepresentation of race and consequent exclusion of black and Latino women. It dialogues with the problem and the hypothesis from the epistemology of trial and error, especially to seek to refute the hypothesis raised. The refutation attempt was carried out through a state of knowledge research. As a result, it was not possible to refute the hypothesis raised.
