Fear of crime, disorders and social cohesion in the Brazilian Federal District

Abstract

In this article we analyze the fear of crime among residents of the Brazilian Federal District using data from the victimization Survey, conducted in 2015. Initially, we present the main approaches to fear of crime and its most important findings. Then, after describing the fear of crime among residents, we explored its correlation with some environmental factors: the presence of disorders, social cohesion and the quality of public services. We found that among these environmental factors, disorders and the quality of public services are more strongly associated with fear of crime, while social cohesion was less important in explaining the phenomenon.
