Children’s scales in the modernist city: how children live and explore Brasilia

Abstract

The main aim of this article is to analyze how children's sociability happens in public spaces in Brasilia, for this purpose, qualitative research draws on the theoretical framework on sociological studies of children and childhood, positioning children as active agents. Data analysis was carried out using Grounded Theory. The results show that children's sociability takes place in the way they use the spaces when they play with peers without their parents. Above all, their sociability is linked to their actions in the superblock, such as making friends and creating their own rules of living. The discussions presented point to the recognition of the child as a citizen and social agent, who has the right to live in the community.
