“Pentecostals in movement for housing: the case of “Ocupação Glória” in Uberlândia (MG)”

Abstract:

This article addresses the connection between Pentecostalism and a movement of people who had occupied urban land in an effort to gain legal residence. Based on an investigation of the “Ocupação Glória” land settlement between 2015 and 2017 in the city of Uberlândia (MG), we analyse the ways in which demands for the right to housing are associated with Pentecostal dynamics and cosmologies. We examine how Pentecostals establish an overlapping of political struggle and spiritual battle. We argue that in the case of Glória, Pentecostalism strengthens the movement for housing, constituting a relevant dimension of mediating between occupants and coordination, as well as of drives and contours of moral referents, although institutionally it is not confused with the social movement.
