Evangelicals and abortion in the Constituent Assembly (1987-1988)

Abstract: This work presents the reflections and arguments that evangelical deputies supported in relation to abortion during the Constituent Assembly (1987-1988). We highlight the ideas of Costa Ferreira (PFL-MA), who argued against the legalization of abortion as a way to protect women and prevent regional inequalities accentuated the risks that the practice of abortion could bring to their lifes. In the set of arguments woman is identified more as a family entity than an autonomous political subject; and it is also up to man and society to decide whether or not to legalize abortion. The article also highlights a point of internal disagreement on the bench: the acceptance or not of abortion in cases of risky pregnancy or resulting from sexual violence.
