Las iglesias le dan continente al migrante: churches, religiosities and Venezuelans in northern Brazil

Abstract: The article highlights the place of religiosity in the relationship between Venezuelan migrants and Christian Churches in Boa Vista (RR) and Manaus (AM). The intensification of Venezuelan displacement through northern Brazil since 2015 mobilized dozens of institutions of a religious nature to engage in migrant reception. Ways of welcoming and being welcomed intersect with the various religiosities of those who give and those who receive. The predominance of religious groups in the provision of “humanitarian” services in Brazil reflects a global trend towards the outsourcing of government policies. Churches and community of believers act in the gaps left by the state. Contradictorily, on the one hand, they demand government actions and, on the other, they strengthen neoliberal practices of reception.
