The Journal Matéria on the way to the frontier of knowledge on materials

The Journal Matéria is closing its Volume 12 with a total number of 71 papers published, including this fourth number (12.4) that publishes 10 papers. Twenty eight papers were published in number 12.1, 19 in number 12.2 and 14 appeared in number 12.3. This represents an increase of 25% relative to the total number of papers published in Volume 11. This also shows that an important reviewing effort was made, since about 110 papers were handled by the Editors to reach the level of 71 papers published in one volume. I'd like to express my sincere acknowledgment to all the members of the Editorial Board and to all experts who worked with this objective.

It is important to note that the papers published in this Volume 12, Number 4 include several themes and come from varied origins, characterizing the variety of approaches the area of materials is treated by the journal. Three papers treat of Surface Engineering (10705, 10959, 10878); three other present research developed on conventional Metallurgy, including experimental (10818) and theoretical (10915) studies on phases and also corrosion analysis (10709). In addition to these, composite (10886), polymeric (10920) and ceramic (10916) materials are also reported and yet there are themes related to biomaterials (10899, 10916). With respect to the origin, the papers published in this Volume 12, Number 4 present research works developed in Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and Portugal.

Since the Tenth Symposium Materia was held with great success in Morelia, Mexico, in October 2007, there will be an important flow of Mexican papers to be published in the journal during the year of 2008. These papers will add to the ones that came from the annual congress held by the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy and Materials in 2007, which are in final phase of preparation for publication. It means that the journal already possesses an important collection of papers to be published in 2008, because the ones just mentioned complement the important number of papers that are spontaneously received from the Latin-American scientific community and are directly submitted to the journal. It is worth mentioning, however, that about 55% of the papers are rejected. The main reason for that is related to the difficulty found by certain authors to aggregate scientific content to the text submitted, by means of modeling the results obtained and/or making a deep critical analysis of the theme studied, based on the literature. This is essential to produce papers that offer an effective contribution to increment the level of information and to pave the way to the frontier of knowledge. Another problem frequently found in the papers received by the journal is related to non conformities to the format established by the standard-manuscript. This homogeneity on the format the texts are presented characterize the format specificity of the journal, distinguishing it from others, and represents an important requirement from the national and international indexing media.

Based on the above mentioned, I would like to ask the authors that will submit papers for publication in the Journal Materia during the year of 2008 to pay special attention to the formatting characteristics of their texts and also to make an effort to aggregate scientific content to the research reported, with the objective to increase the contribution of this scientific communication medium to the incremental advances on materials knowledge.

Cordially,
