Abstract:
Torture is a technique used in Brazil since colonization to control the masses. Although there are norms that prohibit this practice, it continues to be used for the same purpose. The text addresses the similarities between these historical times based on a work that portrays the daily life of slavery during its first four centuries, and public documents that presents the conditions of imprisonment in Rio de Janeiro for the last ten years. The proximity of the actions reveals that torture is directed to bodies socially referenced and non-white, what assures an effective containment through the most varied forms of violence.
