EÇA DE QUEIROZ, THE “GENERATION OF 1870” AND THE UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA: BETWEEN EXPERIENCES AND REPRESENTATIONS

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the experiences of the “generation of 1870” at (and about) the University of Coimbra. For this purpose, the pertinent historiography is discussed, as well as the letters and texts of a memorialistic nature by one of the most important members of that group, Eça de Queiroz (1845-1900). It is aimed to demonstrate the importance of these trajectories and experiences, lived and recreated by Eça and his generation, for the constitution of the Portuguese intelligentsia and the intellectual debate of the 19th century.
