ARGENTINE THEATER IN BRAZIL IN THE FIRST REPUBLIC (1889– 1930): EXCHANGES, MEETINGS, AND DEBATES

Abstract

This article addresses the reception of the Argentine theater by Brazilian critics and theater professionals during the First Brazilian Republic (1889–1930). From a reality almost ignored during the earlier part of the period studied, we can notice in the newspapers and the autobiographies of artists and writers that Argentina’s performing arts become the object of growing interest for many Brazilian professionals, who see in the neighboring nation, besides an accessible market, a space whose experiences can be used to solve problems of the Brazilian theater. Finally, the rapprochement and the exchanges established with Argentina serve as a starting point for reflecting Brazil’s own identity and place in the world.
