ABSTRACT: The objective of this study is to understand how nurses accomplish the shift change of the duty, the factors that influence it, the importance it has for those who carry out nursing care and how this change influences the continuity of nursing care. This work is characterized as a case study. It was accomplished based on the analysis of the speech of twenty professionals that compose the nursing staff in a Surgical Unit in the University Hospital of Belo Horizonte. The analysis of the speeches, indicated factors that affect negatively the transmission of information when there is shift change of duty. Some of the problems pointed out were: parallel talk, telephone calls, professionals from other units going in and out, requests from doctors, patients and patient's family, jokes made by workers during the transmission of information, professional's lack of punctuality to start the shift and hurry to leave it.
