The diseases of Brazil according to Valter Hugo Mãe

ABSTRACT:

The objective of this work is to analyse As doenças do Brasil (2021), by the Portuguese writer Valter Hugo Mãe. The novel develops around the Abaeté, a fictional indigenous ethnic group. In the middle of the colonial period, the Abaeté do not live in peace, as they are harassed by the Portuguese, who want to usurp their lands and subject their bodies. Our analysis will be based on ecocriticism, a current of Literary Ccriticism that studies artistic expressions that deal with the environment throughout the planet, without distinction of borders. However, the greatest contribution to our work comes from two indigenous thinkers: Davi Kopenawa (2010) and Ailton Krenak (2019). We also intend to consider some aspects related to ethics and aesthetics from the ideas of Murcho (2015) and Hermann (2005).
