Statehoods in Latin America: realities and challenges in the double interregnum

Abstract

This paper offers an account of the renewed relevance of the State in a context characterized by what is called “double interregnum”. This category seeks to synthesize the current moment of open dispute both at the global level, between the Sino-Asian space in material expansion and the hegemonic space in financial deployment, as well as at the Latin American level, between commodification movements and redistributive counter-movements. It is argued that at the intersection of both interregnums, processes that have the State as the main actor merge and that, in the Latin American scenario, they have deepened and perpetuated the historical organizational and implicative weaknesses. This affects the statehoods in their ability to alter the peripheral productive structure, qualify their global positioning and internally resolve the excluding and unequal patterns that dominate the region.
