The Cookie Dilemma in University Teaching: Some Preliminary Reflections

Abstract:

The study of social behaviors has always been a major challenge, given the diversity of potential factor involved. However, some behaviors can be explained and understood trough mathematical equations, as in Nash´s Equilibrium and Non-Cooperative Games Theory. Behavior based on cooperation among individuals or groups is the most classical type of “mathematical” behaviors. Eurrently, the relationship between employees and employers in the field of education has been subject to extensive strain, and in this situation it has been demonstrated that an equilibrium has been established as described by Nash. Evidence of this is the frequently-heard phrase. “They pretend they pay me, and I pretend I work”, expressing a form of non-cooperative behavior between universities and professors. This relates to the fact that the eurrent teaching paradigm is outdated and fails to provide the necessary solutions for obtaining cooperative equilibrium. The situation is most evident in medical teaching, since in addition to situational problems, there are specific issues in the field of medicine. The traditional model has proven ineffective for dealing with the new challenge of “life-long learning”, and a paradigm shift is imperative, with the development of a new medical training model, providing the instruments for training a new type of professional, based on so-called Problem Based Learning (PBL). This article aims to expand the diseussion on this new paradigm.
