Mediatization of Religion and the Public Sphere in Sao Paulo 2012 Elections

Religious actors had a major presence in Sao Paulo’s 2012 mayoral elections, implying several tensions between media, politics and religion within the democratic scene. This paper examined 27 articles published by news websites G1, R7, Folha on line and Estadão on line) during the campaign’s last 30 days. It seeks to outline to which extent mediatization processes are revelant to articulate religious discourses in public sphere, taking as a case study the municipal elections. Results suggest that mediatization increases public visibility of religious denominations, making their participation as political actors easier and changing the power balance in public sphere.
