“É preciso força pra saber sonhar”: on dreams among tupi guarani families in south-west São Paulo

ABSTRACT

The article intends to discuss how Tupi Guarani families living in villages located in the southwest of the São Paulo state, talk about their dreams and how they are related to the constitution of the personhood. For that, the article approaches their formulations about the notion of mbaraeté, which consists in the strengthening of the body-spirit, a condition that allows dreams to be experienced in different ways by people. A counterpoint is brought by my research partners when considered the dreams experienced by the children, which are not yet strengthened, and the dreams experienced by people already mbaraeté (strong). It is important to highlight that, for these families, the dreams are not completed when they wake up. Its consequences in people´s lives depend on the actions of the dreamer and his listeners, both on awakening and in subsequent days.
