Abstract
This study discusses the Freudian use of the terms Verdrängung and Unterdrückung and the controversies related to their translations. It approaches the books The Interpretation of Dreams and The Joke and its Relationship with the Unconscious and compares them with their respective German editions. It concludes that, if at times such discrimination between Verdrängung and Unterdrückung can be sustained, in several others - neither less significant nor less frequent - such discrimination is considerably impaired or even unfeasible
