Opium for Ovid: the Pillow Book by Yoko Tawada in translation

Abstract

This paper presents the main issues involved in the translation process from German into Brazilian Portuguese of the book Opium für Ovid: Ein Kopfkissenbuch von 22 Frauen (Opium for Ovid: A Pillow Book of 22 Women), by Yoko Tawada. This work should be understood as a preliminary study about the writer and her book Opium for Ovid, that was written in a foreign language. In a context of constant migration and a growing xenophobia, the experience of foreignness is considered here as necessary. Therefore, by emphasizing the displacement of perspectives, this work aims to provide an experience with the foreign (fremd) through the act of translating.
