Institutional diagnosis models for implementation of Information Literacy programs in academic libraries

ABSTRACT

The article reports the results of application of two conceptual models for institutional diagnosis of Information Literacy in a Brazilian federal university: the Information Literate University - ILC, by Webber and Johnston, and the model of Níveles de Integración de ALFIN, by Uribe Tirado. The diagnosis was a preliminary phase in formulating a strategy for implementing an online Information Literacy portal for the UFSM Library System. It presents the history and guiding principles of Information Literacy in Brazil as well as the role of academic libraries. The two models are detailed, the method of application is presented, and the results are contextualized. It verifies the importance of carrying out an institutional diagnosis for creating efficient strategies for the implementation of Information Literacy programs in academic Libraries, as it identifies the spheres of action in which to concentrate the work efforts of the librarians involved, the institutional partnerships that must be established, and the best areas in which to obtain and invest resources for the implementation of both isolated Information Literacy activities and broader programs.
