Sustainable actions and practices in librarianship: the Univali Library Campus Balneário Camboriú

Abstract

The University of the Itajaí Valley has 11 libraries in its integrated library system SIBIUN. In this system lies the Community library Campus Balneário Camboriú inaugurated in August 2011. According to the institutional discourse, the construction of this library followed the parameters of sustainability and energy efficiency. This article presents the results of a research that had as main objective to describe the sustainable actions developed by this library. Specifically aimed at understanding the concept of sustainability, research in Brazilian bibliography articles to contemplate the subject "sustainability" and to discuss some practices and projects of the information unit itself. Methodologically, the research is characterized as applied and exploratory, with qualitative approach, opting for the methods of documentary and bibliographical research, and case study. Discussions about the importance of adopting sustainable practices will be presented. The results indicate that there is a need to better understand what sustainability is as an integrated concept of social, economic and ecological practices; That there was slight growth in the production of articles in the area of information science in the year 2017; And that the analyzed library is an example of a sustainable library by meeting the basic principles of sustainability.
