RESUMO

Cavichianom. nov. é proposto para substituir Caragonia Takiya, Cavichioli & Mejdalani, 2003 (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), pré-ocupado por Caragonia Gemminger & Harold, 1870 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

Palavras-chave: Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae, homonímia, nomenclatura zoológica

Cavichia nom. nov.

Caragonia Takiya, Cavichioli & Mejdalani, 2003: 2 (type-species: Caragonia bella Takiya, Cavichioli & Mejdalani, 2003, by original designation), nec Caragonia Gemminger & Harold, 1870: 1937 (in syn.).

Takiya and colleagues described the genus Caragonia (Hemiptera) for two species [C. bella Takiya, Cavichioli & Mejdalani, and C. monstruosa (Signoret)] of Neotropical Cicadellidae. However, this name is preoccupied by Caragonia Gemminger & Harold, 1870, a genus of Tenebrionidae (Coleoptera) described as a junior synonym of Trichosternum Wollaston.

According to the current edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1999), "a name which when first published in an available work was treated as a junior synonym of a name then used as valid is not thereby made available" (Article 11.6). Nonetheless, Article 11.6.1 states that "however, if such a name published as a junior synonym had been treated before 1961 as an available name and either adopted as the name of a taxon or treated as a senior homonym, it is made available thereby but dates from its first publication as a synonym". Although it was Reiche who named the genus Caragonia (in a manuscript, see Gemminger & Harold, 1870: 1938, under Caragonia canariense), Article 50.7 clearly states that "if a scientific name (taken, for example, from a label or manuscript) was first published in the synonymy of an available name and became available before 1961 through the provisions of the Article 11.6, its author is the person who published it as a synonym, even if some other originator is cited, and is not the person who subsequently adopted it as a valid name". For these reasons, Caragonia autorship is correctly assigned to Gemminger & Harold in "Nomenclator Zoologicus" (Neave, 1939: 579) and treated there as an available name.

Therefore, Cavichia nom. nov. is here proposed to replace Caragonia Takiya, Cavichioli & Mejdalani, 2003. The generic name is in honor to the entomologist Rodney Ramiro Cavichioli. As a result, the following new combinations are introduced: Cavichia bella (Takiya, Cavichioli & Mejdalani) comb. nov. and Cavichia monstruosa (Signoret) comb. nov.
