Abstract
This article is a critical discussion of the “politics of regard” proposed by Kelly and Matos in an article published in this journal. Our aim is to compare alternative interpretations of Indigenous Amazonia, and to highlight their theoretical-ethnographic consequences. The article will be published in two parts. In the first part we analyse the authors’ premises, as well as the ethnographic data that supports their arguments. In the second, we will clarify equivocations in their interpretation of the ‘theory of mastery’, and suggest alternative figure for action and agency in Indigenous Amazonia. In conclusion, we will enquire into what a politics of ownership achieves.
