THE CURIOSITIES OF DOM CASMURRO: TO TRANSLATE THE "VASTA POLÊMICA"

Abstract

This article reviews pivotal instances of the reception of Machado de Assis in Spanish, particularly in Colombia. It underlines notable efforts regarding the translation of the carioca, although not notable enough to consolidate recognition among the general public. It also asses critical deepenings presented in academic contexts and projects some of those considerations to the praxis of translating Dom Casmurro's complexity, in particular regarding the representation of women and the characterization of the feminine in the novel, in this case, hypostasized in the enigmatic reference to "Pandora's purse".
