THE MASK AND THE STAGEHAND: THE EPIC-COMIC ART OF AFFECTATION IN MACHADO DE ASSIS AND HENRY FIELDING

Abstract

This article aims to create connections between the authors Henry Fielding and Machado de Assis through the following points of contact: the sophisticated handling of the form of the novel, the mixture of genres and styles, the problematization of the idea of authorship, and the importance of theater as literary form and worldview. Through the analysis and commentary of excerpts from the works Joseph Andrews (1742) and Tom Jones (1749), by Fielding, and Os deuses de casaca (1866) and Quincas Borba (1891), by Machado, we seek to outline a comparative analysis that could rescue the name of Henry Fielding as a crucial reference for the criticism about Machado, especially in regard to the epic-comic form.
