First course of post graduation of medical area in Brazil

The course of post graduation (master's and doctor's degrees) in infectious and parasitic diseases of Federal University of Rio De Janeiro (UFRJ) was the first one of medical area in Brazil credentialed by Federal Council of Education and classified with maximum concept by Coordination of Staff Improvement of Superior Level/National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CAPES/CNPq) system. Since its creation until today, it already has formed more than a hundred of masters and doctors, performing in several universities and services of public health in Brazil and in foreign countries.

Created in 1970, the course has contributed for Brazilian medical science throughout these 39 years of existence, having kept level "A" in all the evaluations accomplished by CAPES, as master's as doctor's degrees. It is one of few courses of post graduation of Medicine College duly consolidated.

The Department of Preventive Medicine (DMP) of UFRJ Medicine College comprises Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (DIP) areas and Collective Health. It is located in the first floor of UFRJ Universitarian Hospital building. The department is responsible for DIP teaching and for disciplines of areas of Collective Health (health and work, epidemiology and administration and planning). It has essential importance in medical area, in graduation and post graduation teachings, in research and extension, expanding itself, in terms of contribution to teaching and inquiry through several areas and disciplines of the proper college of medicine and other units of UFRJ. Its importance increased with the appearing of emergent infectious diseases (as AIDS, dengue and cholera) or re-emergent (as measles) and, with new resulting problems, as the recrudescence of tuberculosis and the lack of proposals to malaria control.
