  • INTRODUCTION: DIS-PLACED SIGHTS/SITES - CONTEMPORARY PERSPECTIVES ON FILM, MEDIA, AND LITERATURE Artigos

    Brandão, Alessandra; Lira, Ramayana
  • Hitchcock's queer doubles Artigos

Brandão, Alessandra Soares; Sousa, Ramayana Lira de

    Resumo em Inglês:

The "double" is a well-known Hitchcockian motif. Widely reviewed under a psychoanalytical perspective, the issue of the double still presents other important challenges and this article aims at discussing the queer doubles in Hitchcock's films as "falsifiers" who are opposed to non-queer doubles that emphasise narrative coherence and legibility. In films such as Rebeca, Rope, Vertigo, The Birds, Psycho, and Frenzy, a double condenses impulses that are well described by Lee Edelman: "the violent undoing of meaning, the loss of identity and coherence, the unnatural access to jouissance" (132). These doubles release the powers of the false as they complicate the return to an "order". Therefore, we could argue that such characters are closer to being Deleuzian simulacra than psychoanalytical doppelgängers.
  • I Sing the Body Dystopic: Utopia and Posthuman Corporeality in P.D. James's The Children of Men Artigos

    Marques, Eduardo Marks de

    Resumo em Inglês:

The resurgence of novels dealing with dystopian cosmogonies since the 1990s may reveal a new trend in Utopian Studies. If classical dystopia was defined by the imposition of collective political and social structures upon the individual and out of which there was no escape (as constructed, mainly, by Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four), these contemporary dystopian novels critically construct posthuman societies where the focus is on the development of the dystopian body, which questions and reinvents the very definitions of humanity. This article aims at examining the effects of posthuman critique upon the construction of the dystopian body in P.D. James's novel The Children of Men.
  • AFFECTIVE (MIS) ENCOUNTERS IN A DOLL'S HOUSE Artigos

Katherine Mansfield's "The doll's house" (2000) constitutes the object of the present discussion, which aims at tracing the relations among the characters, focusing on their affective actions - both those linked to negative affects (coldness, arrogance, violence, cruelty) and those related to positive affects (gentleness, sharing, understanding, tolerance, sensibility). Our hypothesis is that the most substantial meanings of the short story derive from (mis)affective encounters - on the one hand, exclusion, prejudice, humiliation and cruelty; on the other, complicity, respect, acceptance and inclusion. Our analysis will be supported with literary theoretical principles and with social theory discussions on the "affective turn", so as to argue that this narrative dramatizes new possibilities of perception and action.

  • MYTHIC DISPLACEMENT IN NIGERIAN NARRATIVES: AN INTRODUCTION Artigos

    Chukwumah, Ignatius

    Resumo em Inglês:

Five decades of resorting to humanistic critical procedures have bequeathed to the Nigerian critical practice the legacy of examining and discovering in Nigerian and African narratives the historical and social concepts of the time and times they are presumed to posit. These concepts include colonialism, corruption, war, political instability, and culture conflict. These procedures are undertaken without due regard to seeing the whole of the literary tradition as a stream out of which narratives emerge. This article, therefore, by way of introduction, seeks to retrieve Nigerian narratives from "every author" and humanistic critical approach by placing them in a realm where a holistic method such as Frye's could be applied. Here, the traverses of the structure of mythical imagery such as the mythos of crime and punishment as embodied in these narratives and how this structure was displaced/shrouded from Frye's first mimetic mode to the last, via the concept of mythic displacement, will be analysed.
  • Urban Encounters: Stasis, Movement, Editing and Memory in Contemporary Cinema Artigos

    Mello, Cecilia

    Resumo em Inglês:

This article employs a comparative approach to connect cities and cinemas by discussing the presence of the urban space in the films Foreign Land (Terra Estrangeira, Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas, 1995), Head-On (Gegen die Wand, Fatih Akin, 2004), Import Export (Ulrich Seidl, 2007) and What Time Is It There? (Ni Neibian Jidian, Tsai Ming-liang, 2001). Shot mainly on location, these films are structured upon a movement between two cities, located in two different countries, and tackle questions of time and space and the fabrication of memory. A focus on their interconnectedness enables me to turn away from usual centre-periphery schemes and propose a new, and more complex, geography for recent and contemporary cinema.

The novels Um táxi para Viena d´Áustria (Antonio torres) e As cinco estações do amor (João Almino) stage the urban experience as exile. This exile can be due to geographical distance (as it happens to the migrational processes typical of the greater urban centers), to economic circumstances (linked to social exclusion) or to psychological crackdown. All those urban experiences reflect the suspension of speech and of life jouissance, both provoked by a traumatic contact with reality.
  • LUGARES/OLHARES DES-LOCADOS E A CONFIGURAÇÃO DO ESPAÇO DO OUTRO EM ATONEMENT, DE IAN MCEWAN, E NA ADAPTAÇÃO FÍLMICA, DE JOE WRIGHT Artigos

    Nobre, Lucia Fatima Fernandes

The problematization of dichotomies in a plural, heterogeneous, and contradictory world, whose socio-artistic-cultural borders are questioned and confronted, motivates the artist to look for aesthetical regimes that may appropriately face these questions. Metafiction, as an intentionally auto-referential and auto-reflexive aesthetical phenomenon, is adequate to cope with the requirements of the contemporary art. Associated with parody, metafiction produces an artistic form that asks for a sophisticated reading and also demands for new critical and theoretical approaches that could deal with such complexity. For the present analyses, we select the scene of the fountain in Ian McEwan's novel Atonement and its correspondent in the film adaptation, by the director Joe Wright. With the objective of reflecting about the dis-placed site and sight of the character-writer Briony Tallis and her consequent effort to perform her auto-justification, we investigate the elaboration of metafictional narratives in the selected material and we notice that the conflict between ethics and aesthetics results in the configuration of the other's space.

This arcticle aims to investigate sound representation through literature and cinematographic adaptation. Therefore, it analyses the representation of sound space in its relation with characters' moods, as well as the construction of identification processes between character and spectator, especially achieved through point of audition procedures. The main goal here is to declare that analysing point of audition procedures means working on a scarcely analyzed (Acima, está grafado com s) narrative tool both in literature and cinema studies. Jane Austen's cinematographic adaptations will play a central part in this analysis, even though other examples will help establishing the dialogue between sound representation, literature and film.
