Seeing and telling - Essay on the biographical genre in Varnhagen

This article intends to examine the use of narrative insertions with biographical features in História geral do Brazil, the most important text of 19th Century historian Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen (1816-1878), edited in two volumes, in 1854 and 1857. The focus of the article is in the first volume; this is a privileged frame to investigate the incorporation of previous research and publications by Varnhagen, and his specific interest in some characters of Brazil's colonial past. The hypothesis here is that biographical considerations delimited in this work display important heuristic and narrative features of Varnhagen's production.
