From Protection to Projection: The Spanish Associatvism in Manaus (1901-1919)

Abstract

Studies related to the topic of mutualism in Brazil are relatively recent and largely concentrated in the south-east and south of the country, areas of high incidence of foreign immigration and worker demonstrations. In the case of Amazonas, these studies are practically non-existent. Here we analyze the mutual-ethnic type associations that were the model adopted by most of the institutions created by the Spanish community living in Manaus at the beginning of the 20th century. The idea underlying the associatvism of these immigrants is, above all, the strengthening of the organizational process and its struggles for rights and guarantees through the formalization of institutions that were able to carry out direct dialogue with the Amazon society and its political decision-making institutions.
