The purchase of the war bonds will bring victory to Brazil: The contest of posters for propaganda of war obligations

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the poster contest created by the Vargas Government in 1943 to encourage the population to buy war bonds. These bonds were sold with the intention of raising the money necessary to finance the costs of Brazil’s participation in World War II. In the context of the world conflict, the intense mobilization of civil society was essential to obtaining victory. The objective is to accompany the work of the judging committee of the contest, investigating the decisions made by them, what were the themes of the winning posters, what aspects they sought to highlight and what relationship they maintained with the political and cultural ideology of the Vargas administration. To achieve this goal, we will use the following sources: magazines and newspapers deposited in the National Library and photographs preserved in the National Archives.
