This article aims to highlight and analyze parental bonds established by slaves and freedmen of african origins, subjects of different social classes and ethnic identity in the context of harbor town in southern Brazil: Nossa Senhora do Desterro, located on the island of Santa Catarina. The starting point of this article is the life path, constructed from some life evidences of the african freedman Francisco de Quadros, the African nation of Catharina Benguela and Francisco de Siqueira, which in the context of the nineteenth century established relationships of solidarity and family ties. From their trajectories our intention is to uncover numerous other lifes' experiences of people with african origins in the city of Desterro. We assume that establishments of parental bonds constitute, in a context of a slavery society, a way to create hope, to enable the survival and reinvent identities. By inventing their family ties, this african people gave meaning to their lives and marked significantly the social space in which they lived.
