Cinema was said in many ways: the emergence of the artistic film from the advent of film society movement in Brazil and Portugal (1950-1960)

ABSTRACT

In this article, I will try to problematize, through a cross-story between Brazil and Portugal, the notion of art in cinema, since it has been serving as platform for myriad cinematic affairs in contemporary. More specifically, I will try to argue, from the theoretical and methodological balises offered by Michel Foucault, how the reducing of the exuberant variety of directions and strategies imputed to the concept of art way back in 1950 and 1960 can not be explained to the satisfaction from the angle of the clearance of reception polo, as if the directors of film culture today had at last discovered the true vein of cinema, prior overshadowed by imperialism of american movies. Rather, I seek to bring out the plethora of political goals that the film society movement sought to achieve through the operationalization of the concept of art.
