Local perceptions of environmental changes in the Oiapoque region: reflections from the experience of training indigenous researchers

Abstract

This paper discusses the experience of a training and research course on indigenous knowledge associated with seasonal environmental cycles and local perceptions the changes in these patterns observed in recent years in the Indigenous Lands of Oiapoque, state of Amapá, in Eastern Amazonia. It analyzes the indigenous explanations for the observed environmental changes, in dialogue with non-indigenous scientific knowledge that associates these phenomena with ongoing processes of climate change on a global scale. Based on the authors’ experience as researchers and teachers guiding the indigenous people throughout the course activities, an ethnographic exercise was carried out with reflections on the research, the training process, and some of its results. We sought to promote dialogue with other anthropological research that also address the issue of climate change and traditional knowledge, pointing out some contributions of indigenous researchers from Oiapoque in this debate.
