Agriculture in the urban agglomeration of Presidente Prudente - State of São Paulo

Abstract

In this article, we analyzed aspects related to agricultural production in the city, putting together two essential dimensions: the urban morphology, and the socioeconomic conditions. The first one deals with structural conditions from which the agricultural practice takes place. Its fundament is the underlying logic of the city’ production and the prerogatives of urban land appropriation as a business. The second is structured based on economic, cultural conditions and new values linked to food consumption, in which the prerogative of access to healthy foods has been playing new roles in production for the purpose of self-consumption or even directed to the market. From the agriculture incidence mapping and from forms application to commercial crop growers, we built a typology of urban agriculture analysis, to demonstrate the different functions the agricultural practice offer to people and the cities. We’ve verified that the cultivation sites are, to a considerable extent, on unbuilt lands, reinforcing the relationship between elements of morphology and urban agriculture.
