Resumo Este artigo advoga em favor de significativas reorientações e reconceitualizações dos estudos do campo da Comunicação, de maneira a acomodar as oportunidades e desafios introduzidos pelas máquinas cada vez mais inteligentes. Particularmente, buscamos demonstrar, por um lado, como e porque a atividade comunicacional vem sendo considerada uma condição definidora da inteligência artificial (IA) e, por outro lado, como a teoria da IA e o desenvolvimento de aplicações que a envolvam complica a ideia do sujeito de comunicação, urgindo requerer modificações significantes tanto em seu aparato conceitual quanto em sua estrutura filosófica.

Abstract This essay advocates for a significant reorientation and reconceptualization of communication studies in order to accommodate the opportunities and challenges introduced by increasingly intelligent machines. In particular, it demonstrates, on the one hand, how and why the activity of communication has been considered a defining condition for artificial intelligence (AI) and, on the other hand, how the theory of AI and the development of AI applications complicate the subject of communication, requiring significant modifications in its conceptual apparatus and philosophical framework.

Resumo Este ensaio procura reavivar o nome, a obra e as realizações do mais significante pioneiro animador do filme, na melhor das hipóteses, marginalizado e, na pior, apagado pelos Film Studies e Animation Studies de língua inglesa: Émile Reynaud. Ele ganhou o Prêmio McLaren-Lambart da Society for Animation Studies (SAS) de melhor ensaio. E continua seu trabalho autoral sobre teorizações da animação, iniciado em 1991, quando organizou A Ilusão da Vida: Ensaios sobre Animação, a primeira antologia do mundo com ensaios acadêmicos teorizando animação.

Abstract This essay seeks to resurrect the name, work and achievements of the most significant pioneering film animator at best marginalized, at worst effaced, by English language Film Studies and Animation Studies: Émile Reynaud. It won the 2010 McLaren-Lambart Award from the Society for Animation Studies for best essay. It continues the author’s work on the theorising of animation begun in 1991 when he edited The Illusion of Life: Essays on Animation, the world’s first anthology of scholarly essays theorising animation.

Resumo A discussão informal tem despertado crescente interesse em estudos sobre deliberação. Contudo, são raros os estudos que examinam o engajamento das pessoas em contextos conflitantes. Este artigo investiga o modo pelo qual sujeitos de grupos sociais em conflito fazem uso de razões concorrentes que circulam nos media para negociar suas opiniões sobre uma “questão sensível”: a redução da maioridade penal. Para tanto, foram realizados cinco grupos de discussão em Belém (PA) e Belo Horizonte (MG), com policiais militares e moradores e adolescentes de periferia. A partir da adaptação do Discourse Quality Index, este estudo analisa: as justificativas expressas pelos participantes; o respeito entre os grupos; o papel das histórias pessoais na discussão. Investiga-se, ainda, o fluxo de argumentos antes e após a apresentação do material dos media. Os resultados contribuem para compreender a dinâmica através da qual os sujeitos se situam num “espaço de razões” em debates plurais.

Abstract Informal debates have attracted increasing attention in deliberation studies. However, studies that explore how people make sense of plural information in the media are rare. This paper analyses how subjects from antagonizing social groups engage with a variety of media arguments to negotiate their opinions on a sensitive issue: the reduction of the criminal responsibility age in Brazil. We conducted five discussion groups in Belem (PA) and Belo Horizonte (MG) with members of the local police and with teenagers and adults who live in marginalized communities. By using an adapted version of the Discourse Quality Index, this study analyses: the justifications expressed during the discussion, the respect between groups and the role of personal stories in debates. It also investigates the arguments flow before and after the exposition of the media material to participants. The results contribute for advancing the understanding of the dynamics by which subjects situate themselves in a “space of reasons” in plural debates.

Resumo O documentário Cabra marcado para morrer (1964-1984) apresenta uma combinação original de elementos oriundos da prática do Centro Popular de Cultura da União Nacional dos Estudantes (CPC da UNE) que produziu o filme, da experiência televisiva do diretor na equipe do Globo Repórter e da prática dos cinemas diretos. Identificar nos fragmentos de materiais filmados pelo CPC entre 1962 e 1964 em diversos locais do Nordeste e compilados com materiais filmados no início dos anos 1980 de maneira específica em 1984 no Rio de Janeiro revela imbricações interessantes entre agendas intermediáticas. Olhar essas relações em Cabra permite pensar o filme como expressão da autocrítica do cineasta em relação a formas pré-64 de filmar. Permite também discutir a obra documentária do cineasta como investigação sucessiva em torno do cinema como meio de expressão de relações de alteridade. Um cinema de investigação, de interação e de performance que privilegia o universo popular em busca de alternativas ao cinema de representação.

Abstract This documentary performs an original combination of elements that were present in theater and film productions by the Students Union's mobile cultural arm, the Culture Popular Center - CPC, and elements that would appear in director's Eduardo Coutinho's later work as a member of Globo Reporter (a rare in Brazil television incursion in documentary, that lasted roughly from 1973 to 1984). The film also brings elements of cinema vérité and direct cinema. To focus on the relations between these fragments shot in different moments in time, and in different places reveals potent intermedial relations, and helps to interpret the film as an expression of the director's critique of his own previous ways of filming. This paper traces connections between this reflexive work, and his later experiments - a series of films that can be considered as parts of a conceptual investigation about film as performance and interaction, and affect, in lieu of film as representation.

Resumo O cinema silencioso recorreu ao som desde o princípio. Porém, malgrado a relevância da conexão dessas duas esferas, apenas recentemente estudiosos estrangeiros se debruçaram sobre os usos que o cinema silencioso fez do som. No Brasil, pesquisas neste âmbito ainda tateiam. Este artigo pretende recuperar os usos que o cinema silencioso fez do som em território nacional, das primeiras experiências com o kinetoscópio (em fins de 1894) até o início de 1920, momento da estabilização do lugar da música no espetáculo cinematográfico. Partindo de uma perspectiva transdisciplinar, pretende-se demonstrar que a cena cinematográfica desse período integrava um contexto de circularidade cultural: apropriava-se de canções populares e eruditas queridas do público e, ao costurá-las aos filmes silenciosos, os impregnava dos sentidos já construídos - elaborando, por conseguinte, sentidos outros, aos quais se misturavam as sombras moventes dos artistas das telas à polifonia social.

Abstract The silent cinema has recurred to sound from its beginnings. Despite the importance of the connection between these two spheres, only recently foreign scholars began to study the uses the cinema made of sound. Here in Brazil, researches of this field are only beginning. This essay aims to recuperate the uses the silent movies made of sound in national ground, from the first experiences with the kinetoscope (in the ends of 1894) to the beginning of the 1920s, when the place of the music in the cinematographic spectacle was stabilized. From a transdisciplinary perspective, we intend to prove that the cinematographic scene from this period integrated a context of cultural circulation: when popular music and songs were used as accompaniment for the silent films; impregnating the cinematograph with former meanings, as well as constructing new meanings - ones that mixed the moving shadows of the artists to the social polyphony.

Resumo Este artigo propõe uma interpretação de alguns filmes do cineasta norte-americano Ernie Gehr, argumentando que eles respondem aos anseios de duas tendências de composição: por um lado, uma busca por estruturas simples, com número reduzido de elementos e baseadas em procedimentos repetitivos; por outro lado, um interesse pelo que há de mais efêmero na experiência cinematográfica, a inevitável passagem dos materiais no decorrer da projeção.

Abstract This paper proposes an interpretation of six films of the American filmmaker Ernie Gehr. It argues that these films are a response to the yearnings of two trends of composition: on one hand, a search for simple structures with a reduced number of elements and based on repetitive proceedings; on the other hand, an interest on the ephemeral side of cinematic experience, the inevitable flowing of materials during the projection.

Resumo Neste artigo procuramos identificar um fenômeno discursivo emergente na cidade de São Paulo: o cicloativismo, que passa de um emaranhado de vozes desconexas a uma "fala articulada" no campo de embates sobre os sentidos da mobilidade urbana. O cicloativista constitui-se em uma nova posição de sujeito na medida em que abre um antagonismo ao discurso estabilizado em torno da hegemonia do transporte individual motorizado. O artigo se desdobra em quatro partes: a) uma descrição da cidade voltada ao automóvel como horizonte semanticamente normal; b) a categorização da política como processo de articulação de "falas", nos termos de Rancière; c) a análise discursiva de peças comunicacionais veiculadas em websites especializados em ciclomobilidade; d) considerações sobre um processo de reabsorção parcial da atividade ciclística nas cadeias de equivalência simbólica do liberal-capitalismo.

Abstract In this paper we intend to identify an emergent discursive phenomenon in the city of São Paulo: the bike activism. It rises from a medley of disconnected voices towards an "articulated speech", in the discursive field about the meanings of the urban mobility. The bike activism constitutes a new subject position insofar as it defies, as an antagonism, the stabilized discourse related to the hegemony of the individual motorized transportation. The paper is divided into four sections: a) a description of the automobile city as a semantically normalized horizon; b) the conceptualization of politics as an articulation of speech, in Rancière terms; c) the discursive analysis of texts published in bike-mobility specialized websites; d) considerations about the partial re-absorption of the cycling into the symbolical equivalence chains of liberal-capitalism.

Resumo Este artigo tem como ponto de partida alguns dos enunciados que atualmente incidem sobre o fazer artístico, especialmente as propostas sobre a economia criativa, a economia das artes ou a economia da cultura. Em geral, eles se baseiam na possibilidade de extrair riquezas do pensamento, das redes e dos afetos. O apelo crescente por criatividade, que decorre desses discursos, leva a críticas sobre a exploração do trabalho criativo e sua inserção nos processos capitalistas. Todo esse movimento pode ser lido pelo viés da biopolítica, uma forma de poder que se estende por todos os domínios da vida. Mas é também essa dinâmica que faz da criação artística um campo de resistência e de disputa política em que concorrem vozes provenientes de diversos locais da sociedade.

Abstract This paper has as its starting point some of the utterances that focuses on artistic activities, especially those proposals about creative economy, arts economy or culture economy. They are, in general, based on the possibility of extracting richness of thought, of networks and of affect. The growing request for creativity, which elapses from these discourses, leads to criticisms about creative labour's exploitation and its insertion into capitalistic processes. All these movements can be read from biopolitics point of view, a sort of power extended throughout all the domains of life. This dynamic is also what turns artistic creation into a field of resistance and of political struggle in which different voices compete from different areas of the society.

Resumo O artigo se vale de uma perspectiva discursiva para compreender os fenômenos que envolvem jornalismo e segurança pública. Para tal, analisamos os núcleos de sentido que mais apareceram no discurso jornalístico de referência no debate sobre redução da maioridade penal, estimulado, dentre outros fatores, pela votação da PEC 171/1993. A observação foi realizada no período de 01 de junho a 05 de julho de 2015 nos jornais Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo e O Estado de S. Paulo. As sequências discursivas extraídas de 60 reportagens apontaram para quatro núcleos de sentido principais: disputa política/barganha/alianças temporárias; falhas no ECA/no sistema socioeducativo; violência dos "menores" x violência contra os "menores"; e ausência de dados nacionais para o debate sobre a redução da idade penal.

Abstract This paper adopts a discursive perspective to understand the phenomena that involves journalism and public safety. It analyses the meaning cores that have most appeared in the journalistic discourse about the debate on the reduction of the penal age, stimulated, among other factors, by the vote of the PEC 171/1993. The observation was performed during the period from June 1st to July 5th 2015 in the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo, O Globo and O Estado de S. Paulo. The discursive sequences extracted from 60 reports pointed to four cores of meaning: political dispute/bargaining/temporary alliances; failure in the ECA (Legal Statute of Minors)/socio-educational system; violence of "minors" vs. violence practiced against "minors"; and the absence of national data for the debate on the reduction of the age of criminal responsibility.

Resumo Este artigo busca caracterizar indícios do discurso de autolegitimação de mídias informativas e as relações que ele estabelece com a historicidade e demais dimensões temporais presentes no jornalismo. Nesse esforço de caracterização, recupera-se um conjunto de falas institucionais de agentes jornalísticos brasileiros sobre si mesmos, especialmente aquelas vinculadas às reformas editoriais de jornais diários impressos na chamada modernização da imprensa. Tal como em outros textos de caráter normativo, percebemos uma simplificação da historicidade dos fenômenos jornalísticos, na medida em que esse discurso se baseia na (re) afirmação dos mesmos valores e princípios na história.

Abstract This paper aims to characterize evidences of informative media's self-legitimation speech and the relations it establishes with the historicity and other temporal dimensions present in journalism. This characterization effort recovers a set of institutional statements made by Brazilian journalistic agents about themselves, particularly those linked to the editorial reforms of daily newspapers in the so-called modernization of the press. As in other normative texts, we notice that there is an oversimplification of the historicity of the journalistic phenomena, since this speech is based on the (re)affirmation of the same values and principles in history.

Resumo A crítica jornalística articulada à experiência é o elemento central deste artigo, que se debruça sobre fragmentos de textos em que os jornalistas elaboram apreciações sobre as práticas jornalísticas. Se o trabalho do jornalista é marcado por essas práticas, em alguma medida, é possível observá-las funcionando no interior das narrativas, em movimentos de afirmação ou resistência gestados no interior do próprio jornalismo. O presente texto trabalha as respostas dos jornalistas Ramón Lobo e Joe Sacco, respectivamente em Cuadernos de Cabul e Notas sobre Gaza, aos processos jornalísticos de edição, geralmente silenciados em meio ao cotidiano do ambiente das redações. Suas leituras deslocam o jornalismo de um lugar hegemônico cujos processos e controles se naturalizam se não suficientemente expostos. A escuta atenta dessa narrativa faz ecoar questões pertinentes ao desafio diário do trabalho de reportagem.

Abstract Journalistic criticism articulated with experience is the core element of this paper that examines fragments of texts in which journalists talk about journalistic practices. If these practices have marked to some extent a reporter’s work, it is possible to observe them operating within the narratives in movements of affirmation or resistance created by the journalism itself. This text examines the answers given by journalists Ramón Lobo and Joe Sacco on Cuadernos de Cabul and Notas sobre Gaza, respectively, about journalistic processes of the edition, usually silenced in the daily environment of the newsroom. These readings move journalism from a hegemonic place where processes and controls are naturalized if they are not exposed enough. The intently listening to these narratives echoes important questions regarding the daily challenge of news reporting.

Resumo Este trabalho investiga como as estratégias enunciativas produzem o efeito de sentido de imparcialidade em notícias jornalísticas. Para isso, utilizando o referencial teórico da semiótica discursiva, analisamos as operações enunciativas de debreagem e embreagem mobilizadas em duas notícias, uma publicada em O Povo e outra no Diário do Nordeste, ambos jornais de Fortaleza - Ceará. Observamos que, ao regularem a presença da enunciação no enunciado, as operações enunciativas criam diferentes graus de isenção ou comprometimento, tanto do enunciador quanto dos actantes do enunciado. Além disso, essas operações colaboram para a construção da identidade discursiva não somente do jornal, mas também dos actantes, que passam a ser vistos em função da imagem resultante da estruturação enunciativa de suas falas.

Abstract This paper investigates how enunciative strategies produce meaningful effects of impartiality on news. In order to achieve our goals, we use discursive semiotics as theoretical basis and analyse the enunciative operations “shifting in” and “shifting out” mobilized in two pieces of news, one of them published in O Povo and the other one published in Diário do Nordeste, both newspapers from Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará. We understand that, while they regulate the presence of enunciation in enunciate, enunciative operations create different rates of exemption or commitment, to enunciator and actants. Besides, those operations cooperate to the construction of discursive identity, not only to the newspaper but also to the actants, which are seen according to the resulting image from the enunciative structuring of their utterance.

Resumo Há um pequeno relato de morte escrito por Fiódor Dostoievski em 1876, inspirado em notícias de jornal, em que o esforço narrativo se volta para cobrir de sentido a falta de sentido original do morrer. Intitulado A dócil, esse texto é aqui retomado para pensar sobre alguns dos caminhos que tomam o jornalismo e seus relatos ao ingressarem na teia de referências associadas à morte em nossa cultura.

Abstract There is a short narrative about death written by Fiódor Dostoiévski in 1876 that was inspired by newspaper articles and in which the narrative effort aims to cover the lack of the original sense of death. Titled A gentle creature, the novel is here taken to think about some of the ways that journalism and his texts get to enter into the web of references associated with death in our culture.

Resumo Publicado nos EUA em 2015, este livro acusa o jornal The New York Times de glamourizar a guerra com edição de fotografias de conflito marcadas pela beleza estética. A seleção de imagens privilegia cenas bucólicas e de apelo emotivo para expor a abordagem ideológica da violência da intervenção militar dos EUA no Afeganistão e no Iraque. Ao mesmo tempo, ao isolar as fotografias do ambiente jornalístico, a obra radicaliza o efeito estetizante e se torna, ela mesma, uma bela antologia.

Abstract This book accuses The New York Times of glamorizing the war when editing photographs of conflict with strong aesthetic effect. The selection of images privileges bucolic scenes and emotional appeal to expose what the author considers to be an ideological distortion of the violence of US military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq. At the same time, in isolating the photographs from the journalistic environment, the work radicalizes the aestheticizing effect and becomes, itself, a beautiful anthology.

Resumo O livro de Maria Cristina Franco Ferraz propõe modos de escape à dispersão do presente a partir de uma nova instauração da cultura letrada. Diante dessa questão central, o que a obra busca é uma ruminação do contemporâneo e não apenas o seu consumo imediato, ou, uma suavidade digestiva em torno da multiplicidade produtiva. Em vez de um cérebro para dar conta de todos os afetos, vários estômagos para absorver o alimento do presente.

Abstract Maria Cristina Franco Ferraz’s book proposes ways of escaping the dispersion of the present from a new establishment of literate culture. Facing this central question, the work seeks a rumination of the contemporary and not only its immediate consumption or a digestive softness around the multiplicity of production. Instead of a brain to give an account of all the affections, multiple stomachs to absorb the nourishment of present.

Abstract This book discusses how journalists have been related with the sources available in social networks to understand their influence on the productive routine, as well as the level of trust that professionals give to those sources accessed directly in cyberspace. The research is focused on the media of Mato Grosso do Sul; nevertheless, the results allow us to look critically at the reality of vehicles within the interior of Brazil.
