ABSTRACT This study compares the photodegradation processes of five tropical woods submitted to simulated weathering under the action of ultraviolet radiation plus water together and only in the presence of the ultraviolet radiation. It was also examined the protection effect of a poliuretanic varnish and a stain under the more danous condition. The degradation processes were monitored by spectrocolorimetry. Angelim vermelho and ipê-amarelo were the most resistant woods to weathering, followed by garapeira and jatobá, in this order. The two finishing products tested did not impede the occurence of the total variation color of woods surfaces but both caused retardation of the process.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine criteria and parameters to inventory and classification the secondary forest of the Atlantic coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil, to show that the regulations on forest use is inconsistent in relation to this classification, although this is its main guide. We propose that inventories aiming classifying secondary forests should include all individuals of each plot with 5cm of DBH or over and that Basal Area should be the only variable used to classify these forest formation into successional stages. This study suggests also that a classification of a secondary forest can de done based exclusively in its physiognomy.Resumo em Inglês:
ABSTRACT Effects of fragments of native forest between Eucalyptus spp. stands on the Lepidoptera community was studied. A total of 790 morphospecies was collected at five sites along a transect: a residual forest and its edge, and into Eucalyptus spp. plantation (at 200, 400 and 600 m from the edge). The residual forest and its edge showed similar numbers of moth species, but these were significantly larger than those of the sites in the Eucalyptus plantation. Cluster analysis indicated that the sites with eucalyptus have a more similarly structured moth community when compared to these of residual forest and its border.Resumo em Inglês:
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was evaluated the effect of two isolates of Pseudomonas, with low (ENA 4413) and high (ENA 4419) antagonistic effect to R. leguminosarum bv. phaseoli strains, on the development of common bean plants co-inoculated with a strain BR 10049. The experiment carried out in sand, showed that inoculation of common bean plants with only these rhizobacteria increased of root and leaf area as well as the total dry matter of the 20 days-old plants. Similar results were observed when common bean plants were co-inoculated with these two rhizobacteria and the strain of Rhizobium BR 10049. An increase of the number of nodules, dry mass of nodules and total dry mass was observed as compared with plants inoculated only with the strain BR 10049. However, there was a decrease of the nitrogenase activity with the co-inoculation of the rhizobacteria mainly with the isolate ENA 4419 that has shown high antagonistic effect to strain BR 10049. Nodules formed solely by rhizobia strains were pink while they appeared greenished when rhizobacteria were coinoculated. The presence of the rhizobacteria was confirmed by plate counting and fluorescence production when nodules were exposed to UV light. Light microscopy sections from nodules originated from the co-inoculation with rhizobacteria showed a small amount of infected cells. These cells were not fully occupied by the bacteroids and in addition they were not enclosed in a membrane envelope (peribacteroidal membrane). In general, the bacteroids appeared free in the host cell.
Abstract The wood is a product from a complex biochemical metabolic process of a tree. This metabolic process has been partially described as a chemical, biochemical, enzymatic and genomic events. The lignification, for example, is a final metabolism line associated with xylem formation, activating the mechanism of the general development for the differentiation of certain kind of tissues. This process is base on a diversified control of factors as nutrition, diseases and hormonal system. In this review the phytohormones were considered as a controller of the wood formation. These hormones control some physiology and morphology processes in the plants, playing an important role on the anatomical, biochemical, physiological and genetic context. The sinergy effect on the xylogenesis, for example has been observed on peroxidase activity.
ABSTRACT Lignification is a biochemical process that comprise the monolignols formation and precursors polymerization in the cell wall. Besides physical and chemical reinforce properties it contribute to water transport in the xylem cells. The biossíntese involves PAL, C4H, 4CL, C3H, OMT, F5H, CCR and CAD enzymes, which are responsible for all lignin precursors formation in the cytoplasmatic compartment. During the precursors formation some enzymes promote hydroxylations as well as methylations, while others act on aliphatic chain. Studies show that enzymes could modify the lignin molecular architecture and polymerization degree. At present transgenic techniques are available to regulate the enzyme activity during lignin formation, resulting in several benefits to the forest area, agriculture and environment.Resumo em Inglês:
ABSTRACT The plywood panels and particleboards are examples of wood composites materials. Materials like MDF (“medium density fiberboard”), LVL (“laminated veneer lumber”) and the sidelong-glued panels constitute a new generation of wood based product. These products use a concept that joins new manufacture technologies to the rational use of the forest resources. This work had as objective to evaluate eucalypt “clear blocks” used as raw material for wood glued panels. Clear blocks are pieces of lumber with small dimensions without defects and imperfections. The results of an analysis of the laboratory production are presented.
