ALGORITHMS AND WANDERING: NOTES FOR TEACHING IN A DIGITAL WORLD

ABSTRACT

This essay proposes a reflection on teaching and learning in the midst of a world conditioned by the contemporary algorithmic digital ecosystem. This does not mean the presentation of a well-defined and effective methodology against the effects of algorithms, but rather the outline of one or another pedagogical approach that seems capable, within the educator-student relationship, of offering students an experience different from the one lived on digital platforms. To do so, we organize ourselves around three moments. In the first one, we suggest a certain image of learning that turns towards self-discovery, wandering, and the abandonment of overly fixed certainties about the world and oneself. In the second moment, it is the functioning of digital algorithms and their effects on subjectivity that come into play. Finally, we resort to the narration of a particular experience and the construction of meaning from it to reveal a pedagogical disposition that, in our view, counters the logic of networks.
