Divided in the Recognition. Political Manifestos and Indigenous Rights in Chile (1989-2017)

ABSTRACT

This article studies the political stands of the main coalitions in Chile concerning indigenous rights, analyzing Presidential programatic manifestos between 1989 and 2017. The main inquiries are related to the differences within coalitions concerning indigenous rights and changes in position overtime. Using the Comparative Manifesto Project literature as a point of theoretical departure, this article addresses the limitation of such framework as it mainly astresses the traditional cleavage “assimilation/multiculturalism”. This article proposes a different conceptual framework that considers the ideological debate concerning assimilation, multiculturalism and plurinationalism. Studing the case of Chile, this paper makes a theoretical as well as methodological contribution suggesting the existence of mixed ideological position as well as relevant shifts over time.
