SUMMARY

Bean seeds of the varieties Carioca, Rosinha G-2 and Bico-de-ouro were subjected to conditions of increasing osmotic pressure of 3.5, 7.2, 11.0, and 16.5 atm during the process of germination by the use of Polyethylene glycol-6000 solutions. The effect of simulated drought on the bean seeds was evaluated by determining the germination speed, progressive germination counts, and capacity for differentiation and growth of secondary roots. The data indicated a very strong effect of the induced water stress decreasing total germination, root growth, and early seedling development even in the 3.5 atm treatment, suggesting the high susceptibility of common beans to water-limiting conditions for germination. The variety Bico-de-ouro was shown less affected by the treatment of 3.5 atmospheres of osmotic pressure-inducing the development of secondary roots as compared with the two other varieties considered.
