Studies on peanut seed storage

SUMMARY

The present paper reports on experiments carried out to compare the influence of several treatments on the longevity of peanut seed during storage. The results obtained permitted the following conclusions:

1) Shelled peanut seed can be stored without loss of viability, provided it is treated with an adequate fungicide. Shelling prior to storage has the advantage of permitting to discard seeds that are not viable, thus reducing the total volume to be stored.

2) The best germination was obtained when the seeds were shelled by hand, followed by an immediate treatment with a fungicide. Germination percentages obtained with machine shelled seed were slightly lower.

3) Seed treatment with a fungicide not only protected them against fungus attack, but acted also as an insect repellent.

4) Since hand shelling is not practical when large amounts of seed are recmired, i tis recommended that peanut seed be shelled mechanically, followed by seed selection and fungicide treatment. These practices would keep the peanut seed highly viable within a nine-month-storage period.
